New Weapons

Galil (Terrorist Only)
Manufacturer: Israeli Military Industries
Cost: $2700

Overview: Israel made this weapon to compete with the AK-47 on the battle field. Currently the Israeli's "official" weapon, this weapon holds 32 5.56mm NATO rounds, compatible with the M4A1. Gearbox describes the weapon as like the AK, only heavier and thus more accurate. This weapon has been seen near the end of the movie The Way of the Gun.

Fusil Automatique, Manufacture d'Armes de St. Etienne (FAMAS) (Counter-Terrorist Only)

Manufacturer: Groupement Industriel des Armements Terrestres
Cost: $2500

Overview: Designed to rival the Terrorist's powerful AK-47, this weapon is known from its role in Metal Gear Solid. It will cost less than the M4A1 and its alternate fire will be burst fire (a three-round burst). A three-round burst fires three rounds faster than the auto-mode can fire the same amount, but has a delay between bursts. This is the official weapon on the French GIGN and will likely play that role in the single player side of the game. It holds 25 5.56mm NATO rounds per clip (the same round that the M4A1 uses). It's supposedly fairly accurate and powerful. Nice combination.

New Items

Ballistic Shield IIIA (Counter-Terrorist Only)

Overview: This item will block small arms fire (pistols, shotguns, sub-machine guns) and slow down high-caliber rounds to a point where they're not as deadly. The shield will take a primary weapon slot and will be bundled with the FN FiveseveN pistol. The shield will usually cover the front of your body while you peer through the small window, but when you move to fire your pistol, the shield will be moved to the side.

This is the first time since November, 2000 that new weapons are being added to Counter-Strike. Please note that the prices mentioned above may not be the actual prices once CS 1.6 is released.

Updated Maps

Updated Maps
Counter-Strike 1.6 will include updated maps. So far, CS-Nation has confirmed that both de_aztec and de_inferno have been given major updates for the new version of Counter-Strike. It is unknown how many new maps, if any, will be added; it is also unknown if any maps will be cut.

Aztec
Narby's de_aztec has been updated with improved graphics and the removal of many gameplay glitches.
The layout of the map has remained unchanged.

Narby's de_inferno has been updated with improved textures and some minor big fixes. The layout of the map has gone unchanged

Comrade
Narby's de_comrade (old pics) is currently in the hands of hands of VALVe, but no one knows if it'll be included in CS 1.6. The map has been done since March, 2002 but was never formally tested for inclusion in CS 1.4 or 1.5.

Steam
Steam is a content delivery/download system. It includes automatic updating. If CS is updated, the server will download a new version from VALVe and restart. Clients will simply download the new .dll files and any new art needed while starting up. Maps/textures are downloaded as needed. If you only play on dust servers, for example, you won't download aztec.

Steam will be the only way to play Counter-Strike 1.6 and beyond, we've been told.

For current players, Steam will simply act like an authorization and download center. You will not need to download anything if there has been no updates, thus making Steam compatible with 56k modems. Important: during the Steam BETA, you are forced to download everything when you connect to a new server. This is to stress-test the system. The final version of Steam, used for CS 1.6, will not have this limitation.

Friends
Friends, formerly known as Tracker, will ship with Steam. Friends is VALVe's instant messager program, like AOL Instant Messenger. A few differences: you can use it in game, you can use it to browse servers, and you can tell where your friends ("buddies") are playing. All functionality is available from both your Windows Desktop and from the Half-Life Desktop in-game, which is launched by pressing the F1 key. That is why F1 key is reserved in CS 1.5.
