On November 5th, Nokia announced that it will be releasing a multiplayer mobile game device, N-Gage, to markets in Europe, Asia, and Africa in 2003. N-Gage targets active gamers and adds to the opportunity for developers already delivering games to the mobile market. N-Gage has a profile that will be familiar to players of handheld game consoles such as Nintendo's GameBoy; it is wider than it is tall (unlike a mobile phone), and it has a color screen at center, with a variety of buttons to either side of the screen to be used with the thumbs.
N-Gage differs from other portable game devices in one important way: It is specifically designed for multiplayer, connected gameplay. Although it's capable of running the kinds of single player games familiar on other devices, it also contains a Bluetooth port, and the ability to connect over the air network - GSM and GPRS.
Bluetooth technology is limited in range - typically to around 10 meters - but it offers very low latency, about at the same level as the Internet. Thus, N-Gage offers the possibility of fast-action multiplayer games playable by nearby friends - first-person shooters, real-time strategy games, and the like. The ability to connect via an over the air network offers the possibility of playing against people half the globe away - and the possibility of massively multiplayer games, with thousands of people playing in the same game world. However, latency over air networks is typically an order of magnitude higher than over the wired Internet (multiple seconds of delay between one machine and the next). This makes it hard to develop fast action multiplayer games that rely on the air network - but turn-based games are entirely feasible.
In other words, N-Gage is unique; it offers something that other game platforms don't.
Nokia has not yet announced complete specifications for the device, but it will be built on Series 60 Platform, originally established by Nokia, but licensed by a number of other manufacturers as well. Several Nokia mobile phones already conform to Series 60 specifications (including Nokia 7650 and 3650).
Nokia also announced that N-Gage will allow the exchange of MMS messages, support polyphonic ring tones, function as a speakerphone, and include a WAP browser.
Nokia has announced only one partner for N-Gage - Sega, one of the world's largest publishers of games, which will develop for the platform - but expects to have several games available at launch.
Games will be available on memory cards (MMCs) capable of holding several megabytes of data. Nokia has not announced how these cards will be distributed, but says its plans are "based on an established business model in the games industry". Nokia will act as game publisher; the release announcing the device says Nokia will be joined by other "top game publishers".
In addition to running native Symbian applications, N-Gage, like other Series 60 devices, will also support J2ME MIDP applications.
The release of mobile devices that cater to particular market segments - like the Nokia Communicator line, which combines the functionality of a PDA and a mobile phone, or N-Gage, which combines the functionality of a handheld game console and a mobile phone - is a natural trend in the evolution of the wireless telephony and data market. Just as Communicator has not diminished the market for enterprise applications for other mobile phones, it is likely that N-Gage will coexist happily with a burgeoning market for games for other devices. While active gamers may prefer the functionality N-Gage offers to, say, a Nokia 7650, which has some similar features, more casual gamers will prefer phones that look and function more like a conventional mobile phone - but still wish to play games on their device from time to time. This, combined with the fact that Java games can typically be installed on impulse, over the air, while N-Gage titles will require the purchase of a memory card, means that the market for Java games is likely to grow even as N-Gage finds its place in the game market.
