Mitsubishi reveals hardcore gaming mobile processor.

It seems that Nintendo’s pond is being invaded by a slew of technology firms, all with an eye on mobile gaming. Although Nintendo is still the largest fish, a veritable whale with a 97% market share, Sony, Nokia, and now Mitsubishi have all announced plans for serious assaults.

Indeed Mitsubishi, if the firm’s announcement made over the weekend is to be taken at face value, is going to be releasing something rather special. Dubbed the Z3D-II, the firm unveiled a processor that runs at 50MHz and is capable of powering 61,000 pixels or 230,000 polygons.

What’s more, texture mapping, including bump-mapping, dynamic lighting, reflections and anti-aliasing are also enabled, making PC ports the code of choice. Taito, a firm embroiling itself in handheld gaming at present, showed a version of Battle Gear, which, according to reports, amazed attendees at the processor’s unveiling.

Mitsubishi did not detail any companies it is partnering with for future deployment of the Z3D-II, but did say that the processor, which is about the size of a large postage stamp, will go into production in May of this year.

Expect some kind of announcement at E3, if not sooner.

The Japanese company that signed a GameCube publishing deal with Nintendo last year for titles such as Naruto now plans to fully support the Game Boy Advance. Bandai is the largest toymaker in Japan and is also the manufacturer of the Swan Cystal handheld gaming system. The Swan Crystal is the latest in a series of Japan-only platforms that have been the only real competition to the Game Boy Advance, although it isn't fair to say that it has ever truly rivaled Nintendo's system. Bandai sent investors into a buying spree today announcing that it will beat profit forecasts for a full fiscal year. The company has experienced strong sales of videogames since its forecast of results back in November.

Bandai has made several big official announcements moreover that their ultimate goal is to obtain 50 percent of their revenue from overseas. The company plans to expand heavily into North America, and into Europe. Besides all the fluff on the marketing strategies and fiscal figures, Bandai has reaffirmed plans including that to end development of the Swan Crystal. They will continue to make more units of the current model if the demand exists, but the company is now focused on Game Boy Advance. Three to four titles are planned by this Autumn. Bandai indicates that it has been pleased by the strong sales of its first published GBA game during test marketing in the U.S. That game by the way is Digimon Battle Spirits, which N-Philes reviewed last week. One of the upcoming titles could be the GBA version of "From TV Animation One Piece."
