Two levels were available in the demo. The first was a beat-'em-up sequence, which we assume is the main component of the game. We picked Raphael and fought against a ton of street punks using a variety of fighting moves. You can mash the main attack button and perform a canned combo repeatedly, and you'll also be able to mix in a few more attacks, like foot sweeps, jump kicks, and uppercuts, to form other rudimentary combos. The combat here was pretty basic, but enjoyable.

The other level available had us riding a hovercraft of sorts through a sewer tunnel. We were firing lasers at tons of mouser robots that were jumping out of the water, and at the end we had to contend with even more mousers while simultaneously shooting our way through a giant door.

It seems like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be a solid and varied action game for the GBA. Stay tuned for more.

נראה מדהים

At its heart, Sword of Mana is a Zelda-like overhead action RPG. You'll have a basic sword combo attack and other special abilities that you can also use during or between battles to achieve various effects. The one ability we saw was sleep, which let you lie down in the grass and slowly recover hit points. Like in Secret of Mana, we quickly gained an ally in the form of a young traveling girl. The game uses AI to control characters helping you, and you can set preferences related to how you want these characters to behave. Sword of Mana also uses the wheel menus seen in Secret of Mana, which will surely take old fans back.

The visuals in Sword of Mana consist of good, solid RPG-style sprites and tiled backgrounds. The game looks more or less like many Square games on the SNES, and this coupled with the fact that the game is a remake evokes a lot of nostalgia. We're looking forward to playing more of Sword of Mana, and we'll tell you about it when we do.

תמונות ורשמים מMetroid: Zero Mission
The next Metroid game in development for the Game Boy Advance was tucked away in Nintendo's booth and was unfortunately not playable. However, what is being shown on Metroid: Zero Missions seems to imply that the game is a remake of the original NES Metroid with some new areas and bosses. In addition, it seems as though Samus will be equipped with some of her skills from Super Metroid, such as the dash, which lets her smash through walls.

Some of the old levels from the game were clearly present, such as the opening area in the original Metroid, where Samus comes down the elevator and finds the morph ball just off to the left. One of the new levels in the game takes place outside and looks similar to the opening area in Super Metroid, with rain pouring down on a rocky terrain. We'll have more on Metroid: Zero Mission soon.

Bruce Lee: Return of the Legend is an original game design and storyline that puts players in the Bruce Lee role of Hai Fang, a martial arts student on a walkabout for revenge on his master's murder by the evil Yakan organization. For Bruce Lee's first adventure on the Game Boy Advance, Vivendi Universal went to Vicarious Visions, one of the most active GBA developers around. The team put together a versatile game design that mixes Double Dragon-esque brawler gameplay with Prince of Persia-style platform exploration, adding a little Splinter Cell stealth in for good measure.
Bruce has a lot of moves at his disposal; his large array of punch and kick attacks can pretty much take care of most of the mindless goons wandering the levels. But there are many places in the game where you'll have to take advantage of Bruce's more stunning martial art attacks, like a split kick that can take out enemies on either side of him, or an over the shoulder punch to nail a guy to his rear. There are weapon pick-ups for even more devastating hits...what Kung Fu movie wouldn't be complete without someone wielding a bamboo stick or some nunchuks? The fighting engine's solid and feels great thanks to tight collision detection; it offers satisfying feedback when players whack a few enemies grouped together.

But Kung Fu is only a part of the game. It's a majority of the game, sure, but players will also have to move through some large, segmented levels, climbing or kick-flipping up ledges and performing specific tasks to get to the exit; finding the right keys, for example...or rescuing hostages that are scattered all over the place. There are levels where stealth must be used; if an enemy spots Bruce, he'll have to start the level over. Luckily the screen zooms back so the player can see further ahead. Players don't have to worry too much about losing lives; Bruce isn't invincible or anything, and it's easy to fail missions thanks to the difficult boss battles, tricky ledge jumping, and large assortment of enemies. But it's like a film...you get as many takes as necessary to get through the scene.

Many of these ideas were used in Vicarious Vision's other side-scrolling action game, X2: Wolverine's Revenge released a couple of months ago, but Bruce Lee was actually developed and completed even before the Wolverine project in mind. But even with that in mind, Bruce Lee feels more complete, tighter, and more versatile than Wolverine does, even though Wolverine's design is built upon Bruce Lee's engine and gameplay.

Closing Comments
Bruce Lee's had a pretty extensive videogame career, spanning from the Atari 2600 and Apple II days, to the SNES, Genesis, and even the Atari Jaguar, right up to a failed attempt on the Xbox. But Vivendi Universal's Game Boy Advance game could definitely be seen as the Kung Fu Master's best videogame adventure to date. The beat-em-up action and platform gameplay is extremely solid, with well designed levels and a decent challenge all the way through. The stealth portions, like in Splinter Cell and X2: Wolverine's Revenge still seem out of place in a side-scroller, but they're not too disjointed in Bruce Lee. Don't let the crappy Xbox game scare you away from this really solid action title; it might be hard to find on shelves due to its reported limited release, but it's definitely worth tracking down.

Presentation
The intro's kind of bland (white text on gray background?), but the game features a decent story that's a tribute to past Bruce Lee flicks. Cartridge save, and a few extras to unlock. 7.0
Graphics
Very smooth side-scrolling action with decent animation for each of the characters. It also features a full-screen zoom effect during the more heated battles. 8.0
Sound
Gotta love the funkadelic music that mimics some of the tunes in the 70s Kung Fu flicks. 8.0
Gameplay
Really solid platformer with satisfying kung-fu action and great focus on collision detection. 8.0
Lasting Appeal
The game's not the longest, but the replay value is in earning the tougher difficulty levels and the additional outfits. 6.0

Sonic Pinball Party features three pinball tables based on games that were created by Sega's Sonic Team development group. Sonic the Hedgehog has players whacking the silver ball around targets to save little Flicky creatures, hatching Chao creatures, and, ultimately, defeating Dr. Eggman. The Nights table is a wonderful pinball rendition of the Saturn game, where players hit the ball at targets and through loops, delivering the ball to the Ideya Capture to score tons of bonus points. Samba de Amigo has also been given its own table complete with rhythm bonus boards, but players will have to play through Sonic Pinball Party's story mode in order to unlock it for standard play. These tables can be played in standard Arcade Mode, but the real challenge is to work through the tournament ladder in Story Mode. It's here where all the unlockables in Sonic Pinball Party are acquired.
The developers really take advantage of the "virtual" aspect of pinball. The collection of tables are obviously based upon real pinball ideas, but the team throw in elements that just couldn't happen on a true pinball table. Each of the three tables has moving items that can be taken out with a well placed shot with the ball for additional points; the Sonic table specifically can have a dozen or so rings scattered around it to collect as well. Other "video pinball" elements include graphic elements that change (the table's artwork will transform during play as gamers get higher in the levels), "scenery" that animates, and balls that change color during specific modes in the game.

Three tables with several mini-challenges are certainly enough for a video pinball collection, but Sega's gone the extra mile with a bunch of additional challenges. The "party" in Sonic Pinball Party comes from the game's three additional mini-games for up to four players, only requiring one copy of the game to feed the additional systems hooked up in the link cable chain. Hot Potato is a strange challenge where players try to send all the balls to the other players' tables. In Hockey, players try to flip balls through the other players' flippers to score points. And Ladder is a cooperative challenge where players work together, timing their flippers to get the ball up the "ladder" of flippers. None of these multiplayer games are really spectacular, but they are certainly nice additions to the overall package. You'll also find an interesting collection of pinball-designed casino games, two of which are locked: Roulette, Bingo, and Slots. These games are a great way to score rings for the Tiny Chao Garden, also included in the package (with a really clever puzzle game that's a cross between Bust-a-Move and Othello.), but the casino games are a little on the easy side since players can simply repeat the same move over and over to hit the ball in the target hole.

As much fun as the tables are in Sonic Pinball Party, Sega's pinball physics engine isn't quite there yet. I honestly couldn't say if the development team "borrowed" the engine utilized in Pinball of the Dead, but Sonic Pinball Party certainly feels like its own game. The ball in this game is a little too bouncy and light, which makes it hard to "trap" the ball against a raised flipper, or pass it from one flipper to the other by hitting the flipper quickly. There are also places where the ball will rest against a flat surface and get stuck, and it's obvious the programmers knew about these areas since the game triggers an automatic "nudge" to free up the ball when it happens. It's a shame that players can't tweak the weight of the ball in the options menu for their own pinball tastes. The graphics are really wild, colorful, and energeti, but when three balls get going in the game's multiball mode, it's tough to ignore the patches of slowdown that occur. But, then, there hasn't been a pinball game on the GBA that's been able to offer a slowdown-free experience.

Closing Comments
Sega's first pinball game, Pinball of the Dead is a very solid title for the Game Boy Advance. But Sonic Pinball Party offers a lot more bang for the buck; lots more extras to unlock and play beyond the standard set of tables. It's a great looking, and fun pinball game on the GBA system. I just can't give it an Editor's Choice, though, since the lightweight physics make it difficult to pull of skilled, bulls-eye shots, and the Casino mini-games weren't balanced very well; it's too easy to get "in the zone" and continuously hitting the ball into the target over and over and over. But the extra little game in the Tiny Chao Garden, a puzzle game that combines Bust-a-Move with Othello is almost worth overlooking the little negative nuances that slipped into the development of Sonic Pinball Party. It's a great game, but not quite a must-have.

A huge amount of extras, which is definitely needed in a pinball compilation. Link cable support, GameCube connectivity, hidden unlockables...the works. 9.0
Graphics
Not a lot of GBA special effects, but at least the artwork is well draw and the tables are easy to follow with a lot of things going on. Shame about the multiball slowdown, though. 8.0
Sound
Hearing the Nights soundtrack brought a tear to my eye. All the tables have a great background tunes even though the quality of the instruments are not quite the best. 8.0
Gameplay
Pinball strategies are really tough to pull off because of the lightweight, bouncy ball. But the table have a lot of things to shoot for, adding to the variety of the overall package. 7.0
Lasting Appeal
Pinball has always been a great pick-up-and-play genre for the GBA, and there's a good amount of items to pick up and play in this game. Especially with the four player single cartridge support. 8.0
